The Cottage 2002
Description -
TRT:  1hr 10min
Different from the 1998 vacation in that this has more of a "Real World" feel to it.  It still has the crashes but it also has interviews and commentary by the family.  This version is much more edgy and stylized.  The vacation took place at the end of July and lasted about a week; that's when I filmed almost 20 hours of footage.

It's my opinion that this is my best work so far.  I had no deadline and I could take as much time as I needed to get the results that I wanted.  Obviously there is always room for improvement but for what this was, a pet project, it's pretty darn good.

This project was completed at the end of February, 2003 after about 4 months of extensive editing and special effects work.
Result - This video was shown to my family when we all got together at the end of February, 2003.  It's not always easy to get together at our folks house because they are in Niles, MI and some of us are in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Tennessee.  Anyway, everyone loved it!  In fact, we all watched it again the next day.  DVD copies were then distributed to everyone.

Suspended Animation - Snowmobiles
Description -
TRT:  3min 35sec
In order to get an idea of what the actors would look like on the snowmobiles and to get some appropriate framing for the composites, the director and producer of Suspended Animation, John Hancock and Dean Jacobson, asked me to get some footage of the talent on the sleds.  I later took this footage and made a fun little piece set to music (Moby's "Honey").  This presented a great opportunity to get some great tracking shots.  I was on the back of a sled as an instructor was driving.  I had one hand on the sled grip and the other hand held a Canon XL1 (we used this camera only for reference shots - the actual film was shot entirely on HD.  I got some nice footage - even though some of the crew was making fun of me because they thought that there was no way I could get any steady, usable footage.  The end result proves them wrong.

Suspended Animation - Snowmobile Composites
Description -
TRT:  25sec
In order to get an idea of what the actors would look like on the snowmobiles specifically in the avalanche scenes, the director and producer of Suspended Animation, John Hancock and Dean Jacobson, asked me to get some footage of the talent on the sleds.  I framed up a majority of the shots to fit the stock avalanche footage that we were going to use.  I then took this footage, did a LOT of rotoscoping, and composited the sleds over the top of avalanche footage.  This gave John and Dean as well as the crew an idea of what type of angles and distance they would have to be away from the sleds when they started filming.

Here's one of my favorite stories.  When the crew was filming the remaining snowsled chase scenes in Canada, John Hancock (the director) and Dean Jacobson (the producer) called me back at the editing room (in LaPorte, IN) and asked for my opinion on what types of angles and distance to set up the cameras at so that it would marry well with the avalanche footage.  It made me feel pretty good that they would respect my judgment on such critical shots.

That footage would later be sent to Calabash (Oscar winning animation house) for digital compositing that would make up several of the exciting avalanche shots in the movie.  Click here to see a screen shot of one of the animations used.

"Among Thieves" Theatrical Performance
Description -
TRT:  41min
Meet Jacob and Thameaus, two longtime friends who also happen to be thieves. A life of crime has become something of a normality for these two, until one day, something terrible happens. They unwittingly commit murder. And not just any murder; their victim is none other than a Roman guard. This crime is punishable by death. Thameaus justifies the murder in his mind because he feels that the Roman "had it coming". But Jacob is another story. He is wrecked with doubt and despair. Jacob seeks the council of Jesus who walks the streets nearby.  But is it too late for Christ's words to do any good.
This is an original Christian based play written by Jason Jones and performed by 8 actors in a small Penn Friends Church in Cassopolis, MI on Easter Sunday 2000. Viewed in front of a packed auditorium, this performance met with only positive reviews.

This project was completed in 1998 several weeks after we got back from the cottage.  I went through about 6 hours of footage.
Result - Everyone loved this.  The only complaint that I got was that there was no other footage besides water sports.  That was my intention however.  I will keep that in mind the next time we go to the cottage.
